Ever tried taking smart drugs to perform better in exams? They certainly work. Before last summer's exam, a few of my mates, merely out of curiosity, took a considerable amount of Modafinil, a drug normally used for narcolepsy(嗜眠发作症).Guess what? While I was feeling sleepy, bored by revision, my mates were more focused. Modafinil is a smart drug that gives a user a feeling of staying awake for hours. It also sharpens the mind, improves memory and helps problem-solving. But it does more than just keeping you awake. It disturbs your mental system, making you desperate to do what you are doing. You just don't want to do anything else but revise all the time non-stop. A recent study discovers that healthy people use smart drugs, like Modafinil, to get down to and complete tasks they have been putting off, because these tasks seem more enjoyable when taking these drugs. This might sound like what a stressed student desires. However, the pills have a range of side-effects. "At present no evidence shows that these drugs are safe in healthy people," as a medical expert puts it, " Ordering online, though easy, is a dangerous way to obtain drugs. You never know what you're actually purchasing. " In my experience, Modafinil changes people's behavior too. Over those weeks my friends became different people--in turn aggressive, cold. Even eating became "a waste of time" and so did conversation. A BBC survey found that of those who had tried smart drugs before, 92% would do so again. My friends say they'd happily do so without considering the practice a form of cheating. I admit I was curious-but not enough to try it. Seeing the strange behavior of other users, I feel a little bit upset and scary. Modafinil may promise to change your grades, but it might also change the way you act. Don't say you haven't been warned! 31. According to the author, his mates took Modafinil for the purpose of______. A. escaping from reality B. getting better exam results C. curing their narcolepsy D. leading an active life 32. Taking the smart drug can lead to ______. A. cheating in the exam B. dropping out of school C. youth crime D. drug addiction 33. How does the author find his males' taking the smart drugs? A. Worrying. B. Inspiring. C. Acceptable. D. Reasonable. 34. Which statement about Modafinil is wrong? A. Modafinil sharpens the mind and helps problem-solving. B. Modafinil more than just keeps you awake. C. Modafinil has a range of side effects. D. Modafinil is safe in healthy people. 35. Who are the target readers of this passage? A. Teachers. B. Doctors. C. Scientists. D. Students.

In today's fast-paced society, few people take time to enjoy the midday meal. Most of us just

rush right through it.We grab a quick salad, or buy a sandwich and eat at our computers, Sometimes, if there is a deadline around the comer, we just skip lunch. The development of technology hasn't done our eating habits much good either. We are constantly distracted by e-mail, social media, and 24-hour news. Even when we do sit down for lunch, we are more connected to our hand-held electronic devices. Long working hours can cause all kinds of health problems, and many developed countries have put in place labor laws specifically regarding the lunch break. These laws give employees the right to take a break during a long work shift, but it's up to them whether they do so or not. Frank Partnoy, a former Wall Street trader, says that employers should encourage workers to take time off for lunch. This is because long lunch breaks can benefit both individuals and society. Writing in The Guardian, Partnoy says that one obvious reason to take a lunch break is to slow down and gain some perspective 认识) A break from work allows us to think strategically ( . and outside the box. It also puts our daily tasks into a broader context(背景). What we eat at lunch is also important. In Partnoy' s opinion, a fast food lunch is more harmful than not having lunch at all.And it's not just about calories and unhealthy food.Recent studies show that fast food also has negative effects on how we think. However, if we sit down at a proper restaurant and chat leisurely with colleagues, we are more likely to slow down, something that hardly can be achieved in a noisy and over-packed fast food chain. Despite these benefits, some employees might still be unwilling to take time off for lunch.Partnoy's suggestion? Make skipping lunch difficult: Employers could ask workers to fill out a form stating their reasons for skipping the meal. 36.What does the underlined phrase "skip lunch" mean in the first paragraph? A.don't have lunch B.have a quick lunch C.work while having lunch D.take a lunch break 37.Which of the following is true according to the text? A.Modern technology results in good diet habits. B.Electronic devices make our life comfortable. C.Many people are too busy to have a good lunch. D.Laws have passed to make workers have lunch. 38.According to Frank Partnoy, long lunch breaks . A.are time for the workers to relax their mind B.make the employees work longer hours C.are for employees to have a quick lunch D.make the workers eat a proper lunch at home 39.In Partnoy's opinion, a fast food lunch . A.saves a lot of time for a rest B.is better than having no lunch C.affects people's way of thinking D.makes workers sit down and think 40.What might be the author's purpose in writing the text? A.To warn us not to eat fast food. B.To introduce Frank Partnoy's opinion. C.To encourage us to work more efficiently.

D.To show the importance of a proper lunch.

I’m not so sure I like my friends any more. I used to like them—to be honest. We’d have lunch, talk on the phone or exchange e-mails,and they all seemed normal enough. But then came Facebook, and I was introduced to a sad fact:many of my friends have dark sides that they had kept from me. In real life,I don’t see these sides of people.Face to face.my friends show me their best. They’re nice, smart people. But face to Facebook,my friends are like a blind date which goes horribly wrong. I’m left with a dilemma.Who is my real friend? Is it the Liz I have lunch with or the anti-vaccine lunatic 狂人) Facebook? High school students are overweight, out of shape and not interested in sports. And according to high school officials across the country, the situation is not getting better, based on a recent study claiming that high school student fitness has declined steadily for the last twenty-five years. This has put many high schools in a dilemma: they want students to become more fit, but they also fear that strenuous(剧烈的) exercise may harm their unfit students. As a result, a number of high schools have cancelled long-distance running as part of their sports meetings, saying the races were cancelled because of lack of interest, but in the back of their minds, they must have also been thinking of the forty students in China between 2002 and 2010 who died suddenly after running long-distance races. Long-distance running is not for the casual jogger. It is a sport that requires strength and endurance and a great deal of training. Most high school students have trouble running 1000 meters without huffing and puffing (气喘吁吁). Five thousand meters, for them, is just a race too far. But by cancelling the race, high schools are sending mixed signals about fitness to their students: get fit, but don’t sweat. Some people show their understanding towards the cancellation of long distance running but more people criticize these schools, saying they try to run away from the problem instead of solving it.

The Sixth Medicine-making Factory has developed a traditional Chinese medicine, which has a good effect on curing heart diseases. Three pills should be taken every time, three times a day. One or two more pills can be added if necessary. Anyone who feels sick after taking them should stop and children and the old are forbidden to take the medicine. The medicine should be kept in cool and dry places and the doctor’s advice must be followed. 读写任务 A suggested version: (Summary) In the past 25 years, the fitness of high school students has been declining. So many schools cancelled long distance running, worrying about the harmful effects of strenuous(剧烈的)

exercise.
After reading the story, I was totally shocked. I think it unwise for high schools to cancel long distance running at their sports meets, which won’t help prevent the decline of students’ fitness but worsen it. As far as I am concerned, there is no fitness without sweat. Students can’t get fit sitting in front of a computer or chatting in the dining hall. They have to get up and move. They’re going to have to use their muscles, hearts and lungs to make their body stronger. Any sport will help them do this, including long distance race. Actually, long distance running is a quite good sport for keeping fit as long as it is done regularly and scientifically. Take my friend, John for example. He used to be over-weight but running regularly burns his fat, builds his muscles and strengthens his heart and lung. Besides, he stays more focused and learns more effectively. To improve students’ fitness, I strongly recommend high schools assign less homework to offer students more time to do exercise. In addition, not only are students encouraged to take various sports but also given appropriate instructions to avoid sports injuries. In short, playing enough sports is the only way to improve students’ health and we should never refuse to do so for fear of running a risk.
